What is it? - A portable scanner is a digital device that can scan physical documents and when connected to a netbook, notebook, or tablet computer it can store the document electronically. Most scanners come with software that needs to be loaded onto a computer. One the file is scanned it can be saved as an image (.jpeg, .bmp) or read-only document (.pdf).
How is it used? - Due to their specific purpose, the device is a relatively simple technology. It can be used to record hard copy lesson plans, student work, teacher handouts, or other artifacts in the classroom. In addition, this resource can be used to collect artifacts during observations of school counselors, school support teachers, and other school employees not based in the traditional classroom.
Effectiveness - The portable scanner is an important resource for administrators that prefer to use multiple data collection techniques during observation. While Morris Cogan, Elliot Eisner, Keith Acheson and Meredith Gall present three distinct ideas on supervision, all agree that collecting different artifacts or data can present a better view of what happens in the classroom. Through the use of the portable scanner, supervisors can focus on interactions in the classroom, pace of instruction, verbal communications, and/or the classroom environment at the same time they can record student work, teacher created lesson material, and other artifacts. By collecting multiple artifacts and data, the supervisor has more evidence to analyze to provide better feedback to the teacher.
